Bruce Smart
Bruce was introduced to Newmarket by a famous horse trainer and partner who liked the work he was doing as a
Masseur and Sports Therapist in Dubai, during one of the World Cup Horse racing festivals.
Since 1997 Bruce has evolved Derby Cottage Clinic, which serves the Newmarket area. The demographics of the town means that the clinic treats jockeys, lads, and pretty much every one associated with the horse racing scene, as well as the young, old, sporty and non sporty population.
The clinic has worked hard to create a comfortable, confidential, and caring reputation. Good relationships with local Doctors and Orthopaedic surgeons has taken time to establish and we are proud of our reputation. Bruce was introduced to Osteopathy by his great friend and college, Mark Booth DO and studied at the London School of Osteopathy.
Together
Mark and Bruce worked on many Pro and Amateur sports men and women, from beginners to Olympic gold medallists in all sports. The
years spent with the LONDON KNIGHTS and GREAT BRITAIN ICE HOCKEY teams is worth a special mention. A really golden period,
which ended as Derby Cottage Clinic became Bruce's main focus. Although Bruce has a steeped history in treating rehabbing
and training Triathletes, he really enjoys the satisfaction of
helping everyone and his patients are Mums, Dads, children and Grandparents from all walks of life.
Bruce originally became a machine tool engineer for a prestigious Swiss company building high precision measuring machines. This early training has proved invaluable as he has carried his attention to detail has carried through to the clinical setting. The breakthrough into sport injury treatments came along as Bruce became an active Tri-athlete and Decathlete in the late ‘80s. The sporting highlights of those early years were racing at elite level for his home based club at Milton Keynes and representing Great Britain in the 1992 Decathlon World Championships where Bruce finished 6th in the world and 2nd Brit in his category. Simultaneously, through his interests in sport, his professional direction changed and qualifications in Sports Massage and a diploma in Sports Injury treatments followed along with Gym Management and Rehabilitation qualifications.
1994
was a big year for 2 reasons:
- Ironman Lanzarote, been there got the tee shirt.
- Complete break away to Dubai where Bruce became the Sports & Leisure manager of the best beach resort of its time, The Forts Grande (now the Royal Meridian) Dubai.
Bruce initialised the Triathlon scene in Dubai and regularly held races of 130 competitors from Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and the UK.
Wearing shorts for a living could not last though! Bruce returned to the UK in 1997 and enrolled on a 5 year
Honours degree coursed in Osteopathy the culmination of which can be seen at the current Derby Cottage Clinic practice where
a very diverse range of the population are successfully treated every day.
During the 5 years of study Bruce has also been a therapist for London Nights Super League Ice Hockey team. Apart from being a Great Britain Ice Hockey Sports Therapist he has also been lucky enough to work with ASCAR World Champion John Mickel.
